Prepaid wireless cards to be out soon in Myanmar

MYANMAR’S internet users will soon be able to go wireless – without investing in start-up charges. A local IT company has revealed plans to sell a Wifi prepaid access kit early next year.
U Myo Myint Nyunt, sales and marketing manager of Red Link Communications, which offers WiMax internet services jointly wâith Myanmar Teleport, said the company would market the kit through computer shops, shopping centres and supermarkets.
“The plan will mainly target youngsters, businesspeople and foreign visitors,” he said, adding that the prepaid card would allow users to access the internet at the company’s assigned areas.
He said the company was considering producing three types of prepaid cards, offering 15, 20 or 30 hours of access, and selling for between K10,000 and K15,000. Each card would have a log-in name and password, and an expiry date.
U Myo Myint Nyunt said the company would assign specific areas – which may be shopping centres and other public places – for accessing the internet with the prepaid cards, including four places in Yangon and two in Mandalay initially.
“The system will be used only in Yangon and Mandalay initially but we plan to expand it to Bagan, which is a major tourist destination. Though the cards can initially be used only in designated areas, the service will eventually be extended within the network range,” he said.
He said the internet speed would most likely be 128kbps. Only laptops supporting Wifi internet access could use the system, and no other charges would apply.
